The Academy of Arts was founded in 1966 with the amalgamation of the State Conservatory of Tiranë (founded in 1962), the School of Fine Arts and the High School of Actors "Alexander Moses". It was the only public institution of higher education in the arts in Albania. In 2011 the Academy was granted full university status. There are three faculties - Music, Fine Arts and Performing Arts. The Faculty of Music comprises a Department of Music Performance and a Department of Conducting/Composition/Musicology/Pedagogy. The University uses the Bologna system of organisation. A member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
