The Colburn School, established in 1950, offers training in music, dance and drama to students from pre-school to adult. The professional music program is offered through the Conservatory of Music, established in 2003, while the community music arm is the School of Performing Arts. The Conservatory provides full financial support to all students, covering tuition, room and board. It also houses several fine performing spaces. A newly-negotiated exchange program has been organised with Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin. The Colburn Music Academy provides pre-college training for exceptional young performers wishing to dedicate themselves to music with an eye on becoming professionals. The School of Performing Arts is a member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education and offers music tuition to children and members of the local community. It also takes music programs to elementary and local schools in the downtown and South Los Angeles areas. A Young Artists Academy offers developmental programs to pre-college-age students in the the areas of theory, aural skills, voice and chamber music. An associate member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
