Certificate of Byzantine Music. Five years part-time. A program to train chanters for Greek Orthodox churches in Australia.

Institution Notes:

The Sydney School of Byzantine Music was founded as the first of its kind in Australia in 2002 and operates under the direction of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society. In addition to the Diploma program there are further programs contributing to the artistic development of practising chanters, prominently through the Australian Byzantine Choir. This group consists of 22 young Greek-Australians devoted to the dissemination and study of the musical tradition. A second choir, the Byzantine Ecclesiastical Choir 'Saint John of Damascus' has been established in Adelaide. The School accepts students of both sexes and of the age of 12 years following an entry examination. Languages of instruction are English and Greek, though chanting is currently done in Greek. A society named the Friends of Byzantine Music has the mission to teach Byzantine music in Australia in line with its cultural traditions.
