Institution Notes:

The University of the South Pacific was established in 1968. It is jointly owned by the governments of twelve island countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Samoa, with campuses in each country. Music study forms an elective part of the teacher training program throughout the University. The main Laucala campus is in Suva, with two other Fijian campuses, one in Lautoka (Western Fiji) and the other in Labasa (North Fiji). Many university studies in other countries may be taken by distance mode from Laucala. The Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies has been set up at the Laucal campus of the University to provide a range of academic and art programmes in its three main areas of operation - Pacific Island Studies, Safeguarding Heritage, and Contemporary Pacific Arts. It offers the only academic degree involving an elective major in music for the whole University. The Oceania Centre houses two Performing Artist groups, Pasifika Voices and Oceania Dance Theatre. Pasifika Voices was established in 2011 and provides public performances. The Oceanic Centre organises various community arts or music classes for members of the local community.
