Institution Notes:
The Institute can trace its history back to 1943. While not primarily a teaching body, it offers facilities for doctoral studies in musicology. The Institute conducts research into musical culture, including music and dance folklore, in Slovakia in its regional, international and social contexts. It issues publications, printed editions and recordings of musical works. There is a collection of rare documents of traditional musical and dance folklore, a vast collection of photographs, audio recordings, films and videos and a collection of traditional instruments. There is a recording studio.
