The Tel-Aviv University was founded in 1953. The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music is an academic institution jointly operated by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Tel-Aviv University. It was formerly known as the Samuel Rubin Academy of Music, and also includes the former Department of Musicology of Tel-Aviv University (now named the Samuel Rubin Department of Musicology). The School comprises academic departments, a musicology department and an orchestral training program of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The Adler-Buchmann International Program was established in 2008 to provide outstanding international students with the opportunity to live and study in Tel-Aviv with the aid of full-tuition scholarships and living stipends. Performance opportunities include participation in the school's symphony orchestra, chamber ensembles and opera productions. There are some fine performance spaces. The M. Grinsten Music Library is part of the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music and also serves students of the Department of Musicology. The musicology department holds an archive of Israeli music containing both published and unpublished materials and recordings. There is a state-of-the-art recording studio.
