Institution Notes:

The National Music Conservatory was established by the Noor Al Hussein Foundation in 1986 as a private not-for-profit institution to encourage the development of accomplished musicians and to promote music appreciation in Jordan. In its quest for quality it created the Orchestra of the National Music Conservatory which has now become the Amman Symphony Orchestra. The Conservatory operates in collaboration with Jordan’s Yarmouk University - students who complete the music program at the National Music Conservatory may have the Bachelor of Music degree conferred by Yarmouk University. There is an Institute of Music Therapy as well as a Bachelor of Arts program in music therapy, the first of its kind in the Arab world. The Conservatory organises a number of ensembles, including the first youth orchestra in Jordan, the Arab Music Ensemble, and the female Traditional Music Ensemble. It has developed textbooks, teachers’ manuals and accompanying cassettes for the first five school grades. There is a joint agreement with the French Conservatoire National de Région de Boulogne-Billancourt and certificates and diplomas are issued following evaluation by a joint jury of both institutions. A preparatory level program provides instruction in performance on both Western and Arabic instruments, supplemented by courses in theory, music appreciation and history, ear training and the like. It also prepares students for certificates and diplomas of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (UK) and other external programs. A project entitled ‘Youth String Ensemble for Palestinian Children in Refugee Camps of Amman’ is run in co-operation with Rotary International. A further project ‘The Middle East Institute for Music Therapy’ is organised in co-operation with the Enschede Conservatory in the Netherlands. The General Secretariat of the Arab Academy of Music (the Arab League) is housed at the National Music Conservatory. Member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
