A private university founded in 1904 as a school for young women, but now a co-educational institution. The Faculty of Music was established in 1958. There are two campuses - in Ueno (central Tokyo) and in Soka (in Saitama prefecture). Music courses are offered through both the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of International Cultural Studies. Advanced music programs are taken at the Ueno campus within the departments of musicology, instrumental music, vocal music and the special course in music. The University’s Junior division (Tanki Daigaku) in Soka offers a two-year basic music program. Facilities include two halls for concerts and an extensive music library containing many autographed manuscripts, manuscripts of Gagaku, and an extensive collection of of syômyô (Buddhist music) and Noh music. There is a large collection of early Western instruments. The university administers the Centre for Performance of Early Music, the Institute for the Study of Musical Instruments, the Research Archives for Japanese Music, and the International Institute for the Study of Comparative Culture. Attached to the University are both junior and senior high schools where students take music studies from staff members of the music faculty. Language of instruction is Japanese, though some courses may be conducted in English.
