Institution Notes:

A private co-educational music college founded in 1961 though it can trace its history back to 1948. It is located about five minutes’ walk from Sengawa station on the Keio Line, and about half an hour by train from Shinjuku. The College is renowned for the quality of its training in performance, particularly on piano, violin and violoncello. It concentrates exclusively on training in Western music. Library holdings include a collection of jazz music on disc, and a collection of CDs and recordings of performances by Japanese musicians. The College’s Orchestral Academy offers specialised orchestral training to graduate students from all over Japan and to a number of foreign students. Studies at this Academy do not result in the award of a degree or diploma. The Toho Gakuen College has a Graduate School of Music in Toyama Prefecture which offers advanced training in solo performance (piano, violin, violoncello) and ensemble activities. There is an attached high school of 300 students where students may take specialised music courses parallel to general school subjects. Since 1948 the Toho Gakuen College has organised a network of music schools offering studies in instrumental performance, solfège and theory to over 2,200 children in 28 programs throughout Japan. The College organises special audit courses ranging from one month to one year for students not wishing to take the full program, and in these courses performance studies are available only to foreign students.
