• In the Departments of Cinema and Drama students may take optional studies in singing, voice production and Japanese and Western dance and music. • In the Department of Television and Radio optional studies are available in history of Western music and ethnomusicology.
Institution Notes:
Founded in 1889, this is the largest private co-educational university in Japan with a number campuses in Tokyo and other cities as well as one in Newcastle, Australia. Two of the Tokyo campuses (Ekoda and Tokorozawa) offer programs in the College of Art, with departments of photography, cinema, fine arts, music, literary arts, drama, broadcasting and design. Programs are interdisciplinary within the College of Art. Nihon University is one of only four private universities in Japan to offer a doctoral program. The University has a well-equipped music library and holds a collection of Chinese and Japanese instruments, as well as a collection of costumes of Kyogeki (Chinese traditional opera). Attached junior and senior high schools provide practice in teaching skills for the 60% or so of students who wish to become school music teachers.
