A private co-educational music academy founded in 1929 and regarded as equivalent to a university. There are campuses in Tokyo (the Ekoda campus) for third and fourth year and graduate students, and in Iruma (in Saitama prefecture on the outskirts of Tokyo, opened in 1971) for first and second year students. In 1993 the academy opened its third campus, Parnassos (in Tama), where post-graduate instruction is given to music specialists. At all three campuses students between the ages of 4 and 17 receive training at Musashino’s Affiliated Music School. Facilities include Beethoven Hall (1,085 seats), Bach Hall (1,202 seats), Mozart Hall (500 seats), Schubert Hall (274 seats), an extensive library, audio library and concert organs. The academy houses a number of rare music manuscripts and has a vast collection of over 5,000 historical musical instruments. There is also an Education and Culture Research Centre and an opera school. The Doctoral program commenced in 2004 and is one of only four private universities in Japan to offer a doctoral degree. Musashino performing groups have produced CDs which are on sale throughout Japan and internationally.
