A private co-educational music college. Founded in 1926 as the Tokyo Conservatory of Music, it was renamed in 1951. The College is located 35 km west of downtown Tokyo in Tachikawa-shi, one of the largest cities in the Tokyo metropolitan area. There are two departments: performance and composition, and music cultures & education. This is one of only four private universities in Japan to offer doctoral degrees. Kunitachi has the most extensive music library in Asia. The Institute for Organological Research has a very large collection of traditional musical instruments from all parts of the world, used for research and for performance; it is a member of the international committee of the International Council of Museums of UNESCO. The Institute produces regular publications and publishes numerous monographs on specific topics. There are research units for music therapy and for Beethoven studies. The catalogue of early printed editions of Beethoven is the third largest in the world. Facilities include a 1,290-seat concert hall, a 500-seat recital hall and a sonology laboratory. There is a well-equipped Centre for Computer Music and Music Technology. A fine sculptured carillon graces the courtyard. There are four affiliated schools at kindergarten, elementary and secondary levels, each with music instruction given by college staff. The College offers the only course in the training of kindergarten and pre-school teachers of music in Japan. It organises an annual summer music school. There are cooperative agreements with a number of other major conservatories in Europe and Asia.
