The Conservatorio was founded in 1906. It has supplied professional orchestral players for orchestras throughout Colombia and is regarded as equivalent to a university. There is some emphasis on traditional music in adult and teacher education programs. The Conservatorio has a music documentation centre with a substantial collection of scores for orchestra, band and choirs as well as for solo instruments. A generous donation of 205 orchestral instruments from the Japanese government has enabled students to present performances of high quality. The Conserrvatorio houses a workshop for manufacture and repair of stringed instruments. There is also a music data processing laboratory with computers. The Alberto Castille concert hall has excellent acoustic properties. In addition to the professional program the Conservatorio offers music training to children and adults through its Escuela de Música. A schools program takes music performances to local schools.
