Institution Notes:

This private co-educational music academy can trace its history back to 1930 and gained its current name and status in 1984. The academy places particular emphasis on vocal music and study of Western opera and has established an Opera Research Centre which co-operates with the Japan Opera Foundation. In 1994 the Academy established an undergraduate program in arts management - then the only university-level professional training program of its type in Japan. The Showa School of Musical Arts covers the areas of performance, conducting and composition, while the Department of Music and Arts Management offers programs in liberal arts, arts management, ballet, music theatre and music therapy. Facilities include a concert hall, an opera theatre, a studio for orchestra rehearsals, and an electronic music studio as well as ensemble rooms, private practice rooms and a large music library. There is a baroque music ensemble. The Showa Junior College of Music offers courses in classical and jazz performance, choral conducting and digital composition.
