Institution Notes:
This private Catholic university was founded in 1961 though it can trace its history back to 1938. It is run by the Lebanese Maronite Order of Monks. The Faculty of Music, founded in 1973, consists of two departments - Music (comprising musicology, ethnomusicology, music education and sacred music), and Specialist Music (performance, composition, aural skills). There are three choirs - religious singing choir, Western singing choir and Arab singing choir. In addition to its teaching role the Faculty also acts as a research centre (Centre de Documentation et de Recherche), collecting, preserving, publishing and studying musicological and ethnomusicological Lebanese and Middle Eastern materials. The library holds significant collections of manuscripts and recordings of Lebanese and Middle Eastern folk song, liturgy of the Lebanese church, Arabic classical music and the works of a number of Lebanese composers. There is an Institute of Sacred Music. Instruction may be given in any of Arabic, French, English or Armenian. In addition to the full-time professional music program, the Faculty of Music runs a School of Music offering music training to young people and interested adults, and awards a certificate to mark the completion of Level 1 (niveau élémentaire) and Level 2 (niveau moyen) programs. The children's program may include Kodály training. Students wishing to proceed to Level 3 and to the Specialist Music program continue into the professional course in the Faculty of Music.
