Institution Notes:

The Conservatoire, an autonomous institution funded by the State, was founded in the 1930s. It is divided into an Oriental Department and an Occidental Department, with eleven branches throughout the country. It is the headquarters of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra and the Lebanese National Orchestra for Oriental Arabic Music. There is an attached publishing house specialising in music which has issued books on theory and Eastern instruments. The Conservatoire has links with the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt in France, the Komitas Conservatory in Armenia and the Gnessin Institute in Russia. During the Lebanese war (1975-1991) the Conservatoire was badly damaged, with all the instruments, documents and library looted and burned. It resumed teaching in 1991 and is on the way to rebuilding both its traditions and material surroundings. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
