Institution Notes:

The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre was founded in 1918 as the Kaunas Music School. In 1949 it was merged with the Vilnius Conservatoire and became the Lithuanian State Conservatoire. In 2004 it gained its current name and status and was further enlarged in 2018 with the integration of the Academy of Arts from Klaipeda University. In Vilnius there are three faculties - Music, Theatre & Film and, since 2018 in the Klaipėda Faculty, studies in music, dance and theatre. There is an Institute of Musicology whose library holds the Archive of Folk Music - a collection of some 80,000 authentic folk tunes. The Experimental laboratory of Folk Instruments holds a large collection of instruments. It constructs, manufactures and repairs instruments for Lithuanian folk music. Facilities include state-of-the-art electronic music studios. Language of instruction is Lithuanian, but English or other languages may be used at times. The Academy is a member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), the Association of the Baltic Academies of Music (ABAM), the Network of International Co-operation in Arts (NICA) and is an active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
