Institution Notes:

The University of Malawi was established in 1964 with Chancellor College as the largest of its constituent colleges. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts was created in 1981, and consists of three sections – Drama, Fine Arts and Music. The Music Section promotes an active community music program involving, among other things, music therapy work in hospitals, presentations relating to the AIDS problem, and music-related work experience with local uncared-for boys. There are evening courses and choral workshops. This is the only teacher training program in Malawi that trains secondary school music teachers. The Music Section publishes compositions by Malawian composers as well as books and articles on traditional and contemporary Malawian music. It prepares and promulgates teaching materials.
