Institution Notes:
The Conservatory can trace its history back to 1920. There are departments of composition/conducting, musicology, woodwind/strings, voice, piano, Chinese traditional instruments, folk music, sound engineering, music education, music archaeology, pop singing, dance and a community education program. Three colleges operate on campus: music education institute, continuing education institute and arts/performance institute. Attached middle and primary schools offer programs for gifted students. Some programs may be taught in English. Facilities include a fine concert hall, and extensive music library, practice and lecture rooms, a digital recording studio, dormitory accommodation for students and residential accommodation for staff. There is an Orient Symphony Orchestra and a China Bell (Bianzhong) Performance Ensemble. The Conservatory currently has 1,300 full-time students and welcomes overseas students. There is an vast library as well as a collection of folk songs and melodies of China and a collection of ethnic and folk instrumental music of China. Research projects include study of Taoist music of Mt Wudang and Chu musical culture, especially musical relics of the Warring States period over 2000 years ago, recently unearthed at Leigudun, Suixian County.
