Institution Notes:

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute was established in 1970 as a joint venture between the government of India and the government of Mauritius. The Department of Indian Music and Dance was established within the School of Indian Music and Fine Arts in 1975 and in 2006 it became the School of Performing Arts. It is a centre for the promotion of Indian culture and of education and culture in general and receives a grant from the Ministry of Education. There are departments of vocal music, percussion instruments, stringed instruments, dance, distance education & E-learning, curriculum development and creativity and performances. The Institute collaborates with the University of Mauritius to offer a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis on Hindustani music. It is organised into four sections: • School of Mauritian, Asian and African Studies. • School of Indian Studies. • School of Music and Fine Arts, comprising a Department of Indian Music and Dance and a Department of Fine Art. There is also a Centre for Performing Arts. • The outreach program is organised by the Department of Extra-Mural Studies and Distance Education. The Institute has produced recordings of Indian music with initial assistance from UNESCO as well as a cassette of children's traditional singing games. It offers courses to children in basic performance on Indian instruments and in Indian dance. There are also one-year hobby courses for those interested in gaining some proficiency in rudiments of Indian music and dance, with programs in Hindustani vocal music, Karnatic vocal music and in sitar, tabla, violin, flute, bharata natyam, kathak and kuchipudi. Attached to the Institute is a secondary school offering a full secondary curriculum with some emphasis on studies in Indian culture, and a Gandhian basic school offering an alternative model of pre-vocational training for those who do not benefit from the present academic programs at secondary level. This curriculum includes some study of Indian music and dance as part of a leisure education program.
