Institution Notes:

The Academy of Music was founded in 1977. It provides free music tuition to students aged between 5 and 27 years residing in the Principality of Monaco and its immediate surroundings. Those living beyond this area are required to audition for places. There are programs in music and theatre, with three departments in the music area: classical, early music and jazz/popular. The music programs are organised in four cycles culminating in the award of the Diploma. Tuition with highly trained staff is available from age six for many instruments, and students may continue studies till age 30 (or 40 for singers). There is a program involving placement of qualified music teachers in local schools. Annual examinations are conducted in May and June, the more skilled performers being given the opportunity to perform with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Monte-Carlo. The Academy prepares students to apply for places in higher Conservatoires outside the country, and for international competitions.
