Institution Notes:

The university, an autonomous, not-for-profit public institution, was founded in 1991 and the School of Arts was established in 1996 in Bhaktapur, about 30 kilometres east of Kathmandu. The Department of Music aims to study and preserve Nepalese music traditions and their relationship with other South Asian musics. This is the only university department in South Asia conducting a full course in ethnomusicology. Facilities include a digital sound recording studio, a developing climatised sound archive of Asian musics and a musical instrument exhibition. The London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) recognizes the examinations passed at the University of Kathmandu’s Department of Music. Some ability in English language is required by students. The music department organises concert tours of the Masterdrummers of Nepal - a series of ten musicians (teachers and students), with Nepalese instruments and dance.
