Institution Notes:
The Xinghai Conservatory of Music offers a program of advanced music training in South China. Originally founded in 1932 it underwent a number of name changes, and in 1985 gained its current name in memory of a prominent Chinese musician Mr. Xian Xinghai. There are departments of theory/composition, musicology, acoustics, Chinese traditional music, orchestral music, vocal music, modern music, pop music, piano, music education, folk music, arts management, instrument technology, dance, as well as a graduate division. Facilities include computer composition laboratories, audio-visual teaching rooms, a recording studio, a fine concert hall and a large suite of practice studios. Full dormitory accommodation is available for students and residences for staff. A hotel and hospital are located on campus. There is an active research institute conducting research on the regional folk music in Guangdong, including Cantonese music, Han music and Chaozhou music. An active exchange program with overseas conservatories and music schools is in operation. An attached middle school offers music training for gifted students.
