This institution can trace its history back to 1682. In January 1990 the Royal Conservatoire (KC) and the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) merged to become the School of Visual Arts, Music and Dance. Since 2010, the institution has been named The University of the Arts (Hogeschool der Kunsten Den Haag). In 2021 the institution moved to a new home ‘Amare’ with greatly improved facilities.. The opera program is organised through De Nieuwe Opera Academie. The four-year Doctoral program (docARTES, launched in 2004) is designed for musician-researchers (performers, composers and the like) and is offered by a consortium of partner institutions in several European countries co-ordinated by the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Belgium. The participating institutions are: • Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Association, Leuven (Belgium); • University of Leuven and the Lemmensinstituut (Belgium); • Antwerp University Association, Antwerp (Belgium); • Royal Conservatoire Antwerp (Belgium); • Leiden University, Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (Netherlands); • Koninklijk Conservatorium voor Muziek en Dans (The Hague, Netherlands); • Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Netherlands). The School for Young Talent is attached to the Conservatoire and offers children from age 10 a general curriculum while also offering specialised tuition to those contemplating music as a profession. Additionally there are programs for the very young. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
