Institution Notes:
Established in 1894 and formerly known as the Nelson School of Music, the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts (NCMA) gained its current name and status in 2018. It is the oldest independent music school in New Zealand. There are excellent technical facilities including a fine recording studio and a 380-seat acoustically excellent auditorium with an organ and Steinway grand piano. The School organises a range of community classes from pre-school groups to the training orchestra for adults. Private instrumental and vocal tuition is also offered. There is a partnership with the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) which enables new music diploma and certificate programs to be provided.
