Institution Notes:

Music has been taught at the University of Canterbury since 1891. There is a well-equipped library and excellent facilities, including a fine auditorium with an organ, a number of early instruments, some Asian instruments including a Balinese gamelan. Music subjects may be taken in several other degree courses. The Pettman Junior Academy of Music provides performance-based studies for talented young performers who plan to follow a career in music.
