Institution Notes:

The Central Conservatory was founded in 1950 and in 2000 it came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Departments include composition, conducting, musicology, voice and opera, piano, Western orchestral instruments, Chinese traditional instruments, music education, music and information technology, music therapy. Over 1600 students are in attendance and foreign students are welcomed. A quarterly music journal is published. Facilities include the largest conservatory music library in China, eight concert halls, over 500 pianos (an All-Steinway School) and numerous other instruments, an electronic music studio, recording studio, a violin making research centre and music instrument repair workshop as well as a voice research centre. A health clinic is on campus. There are research institutes for musicology, violin making, music therapy and voice research as well as an electroacoustic music centre. Since 1994 the Conservatory has organised an annual Musicacoustica festival. The affiliated College of Modern Distance Music Education is an experimental institution on distance education. The Continuing Music Education College is a research and administrative institution on continuing education. There is a Buddhist Music and Culture Research Center which promotes Buddhist music composition and carries out research and study on Buddhist music and audio-video recordings. The Conservatory offers short-term training courses in such areas as the performance and history of Chinese traditional music, Chinese drama, Chinese folksong, Chinese culture, Western music performance. An evening program caters for interested adults. Attached elementary and secondary schools provide general education and specific music training to selected gifted young people.
