Founded in 1955 and formerly known as the University of Biafra, this University gained its current name in 1970 and is commonly referred to as UNN. The Department of Music was first established in 1960. The Sam Chukwu Memorial Recording Studio (SCMRS), the result of a collaboration between the University and African Digital Ethnography Project (in Morehouse College, USA) is the first digital recording studio for training, educational and cultural documentation in a Nigerian university.
