Institution Notes:

The Kim Won-Gyun University of Music and Dance was named for Kim Won-Gyun one of North Korea’s most celebrated composers and a politician who composed the national anthem. The institution was founded in 1949 and, combining with Pyongyang Art College in 1972, became Pyongyang’s University of Music and Dance. It consists of five divisions: national instrumental music, modern instrumental music, vocal, composition (with conducting and theory), and dance. Entry to the program is following completion of the preliminary stages of music study at a local college of arts. There is a full symphony orchestra. A new building, situated on the bank of the River Taedong, was completed in 2007. Language of instruction is Korean. There are additional programs - a two-year course for kindergarten children, a four-year primary course and a three-year preparatory course for young musicians.
