The University’s Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design was established in 2017 from an amalgamation of the earlier Grieg Academy and the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. The Greig Academy is the music school of the University of Bergen. It houses the Institute of Ethnic Folklore (Etno-Folkloristisk Institutt) which holds a large collection of manuscripts, recordings and videos of traditional music of Norway. The Grieg Academy Music Therapy Research Centre in Interdisciplinary Music Studies offers research education courses that gather PhD candidates in a range of music disciplines, including music education, music therapy, musicology, performance and composition. There is an active early music ensemble. Languages of instruction are Norwegian and English. There is close co-operation with the Ole Bull Academy in Voss, which offers studies in Norwegian folk and traditional music. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
