Silliman University was founded in 1901 as a boy’s school and gained university status in 1938. The College of Performing Arts was first established in 1912, becoming the Silliman Conservatory of Music in 1934 and later the School of Music in 1941. In 1969 it joined with the Fine Arts Department, finally being granted its current name in 2001, with schools of music arts and theatre arts. It has a close relationship with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines. Facilities include practice rooms, the Luce Auditorium and two well-equipped libraries. The School of Music also offers a non-degree program in music performance, painting and dance to interested children and adults.
