The Frederic Chopin University of Music (Uniwersytet Muzycznay im. Fryderyka Chopina) is one of the oldest music academies in Europe, being founded in 1810, and gaining its current name and status in 2008. Postgraduate courses are available only to Polish and European Union citizens (with proof of knowledge of Polish language). Other students may only take the program in postgraduate artistic training (performance). There are ten departments: • Composition and Theory; • Orchestral and Opera Conducting; • Choral Conducting, Rhythmics and Music Education; • Instrumental Studies; • Vocal and Acting Studies; • Dance; • Church Music; • Sound Engineering; • Jazz and Stage Music; • Department of Instrumental and Music Educational Studies in Bialystok. The Academy organises a number of international music competitions, including the international Chopin competition, the international organ competition, the Tadeusz Wronski international violin competition, the Wanda Landowska international harpsichord competition and the Witold Łutoslawski international ‘cello competition. The Academy houses the Polish Section of the International Society for Music Education (ISME). It is also the headquarters of the International Chopin Information Centre. The library has an extensive collection of books and scores, including a number of 19th-century autographs, as well as some 20,000 recordings, cassettes and tapes. Housed at the Academy is the Foundation of the National Edition of Fryderyk Chopin’s Works, established in 1998, which is preparing the only edition of Chopin’s works based on the entire body of available sources. There is a branch of the Academy in the city of Bialystok. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
