The Academy of Music Karol Szymanowski (Akademia Muzyczna im. Karola Szymanowskiego) was founded in 1929. It is regarded as equivalent to a university. There are four departments: • Department of Composition, Conducting, Theory, Music Education and Music Therapy; • Department of Jazz and Popular Music; • Instrumental Department; • Vocal and Acting Department. Facilities include a new 480-seat concert hall. The library holds the Archives of Silesian Music Culture. There is a Museum of Silesian Organs containing collections of instruments, antique pipes, bellows, registration boards and 26 harmoniums. The Academy organises an International Jazz Improvisation Competition. Language of instruction is Polish, but some studies are offered in English. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
