Diplôme d’études musicales (DEM). A two- to three-year pre-professional program in performance and associated studies which may include early music, theory, aural skills and composition.
The Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Musique, Danse et Art Dramatique de la Réunion was founded in 1987 and is one of over 30 such institutions in France. Its headquarters are in Saint-Denis, with other teaching centres in Saint-Benoît, Saint-Paul and Saint-Pierre. The program is organised in cycles. The first (éveil musical’) four years, the second, four years, the third ('cycle d’orientation professionnelle') and fourth ('cycle d’enseignement supérieur professionnelle'). In addition to its higher level program the Conservatoire organises choirs for children and for interested adults in the community. There are also ensembles involving traditional instruments and dances. The Conservatoire is a public institution offering programs in music, classical and contemporary dance and drama. There are over 500 instruments available for hire to students. The island of Réunion has the only professional orchestra of all overseas territories of France.
