The Gheorghe Dima National Academy of Music (Academia Națională de Muzică „Gheorghe Dima) was founded in 1919 and was granted its current name and status in 1990. It is regarded as equivalent to a university. There are Faculties of instrumental music, singing and stage art, and theory (conducting, musicology, composition, pedagogy). In 1998 the Academy established a branch music college in Piatra Neamt, offering music pedagogy programs. Language of instruction is Romanian, though most of the teaching staff also speak English, French or German. The Academy's MediaMusica Publishing House was established in 2001. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
