The conservatory was founded in 1967 as a branch of Leningrad Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. In 1991 it became an independent institution and in 2003 it gained its current name and status. There are two faculties - Performing, and Theory and Conducting - organised into twelve departments. Students study the musical and ethnographical traditions of Ugro-Finnish peoples and cultures, and some learn to play folk instruments. The conservatory has an active research centre and issues publications on music and music education. Research projects include studies of the musical culture of the north-west of Russia, Finland and Scandinavia. Regular seminars, conferences and music festivals are held. Non-Russian students are mostly from Finland, Korea and former Soviet Republics.
