The Escuela Moderna is a private institution founded in 1940. The Professional Institute was established in 1989. There are departments of music, dance and visual arts. The music school consists of two sections: • Escuela Moderna, with a Junior Department offering music training in performance (piano, guitar, recorder, flute, violin, violoncello), theory, harmony, aural training, music history and ensemble to young people and non-professionals. • Instituto Profesional, with departments of music, visual arts and dance, for the training of professionals in each field. It publishes the periodical ‘Matis’ three times per year. Facilities include a 250-seat auditorium. A second campus is in Viña del Mar. There is an exchange agreement with the Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana, Cuba.
