Institution Notes:
This institution was founded in 1895 as a junior school and was called the Gnessin State Musical College. It added higher levels in 1944, and eventually became a full tertiary institution, now known as the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music. In addition to a full conservatory program with an original emphasis on pedagogy, there is a large department of folk and national music, one of the first in Russia. Some distance-mode tuition in appropriate subjects is available for mature-age amateur performers wishing to gain a formal qualification, provided they have the performing ability to obtain entrance. Part-time students are accepted. There is a folk music laboratory and a collection of folk music materials from all over Russia as well as a museum of the house and furnishings of the founder, Elena Gnessina. Two music schools, elementary and secondary, are attached. Facilities include two pipe organs, one of cathedral-size. The Academy organises an annual Gnessin music summer school. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
