The Conservatoire was founded in 1945. It is situated in the Middle Volga region in a multi-ethnic area, and trains students from Russia, China, Korea, Japan and other countries both in Western and Tatar music cultures. There is a separate Faculty of Bashkir Music, established in 1996, which includes a workshop for making national Bashkir instruments. The Conservatoire has a chair of organ and harpsichord, one of only two such chairs in Russia. There is a strong program of research into musical folklore of different peoples of the area, musical cultures, performance interpretation, history, theory and sociology of music. A number of student ensembles are organised. A local publishing house is located in the Conservatoire which also organises a number of annual music festivals. Courses are taught in Russian; some subjects are also taught in Tatar. A residential special music school is attached to the Kazan conservatory.
