This national university can trace its history back to 1838 and gained its current name and status in 1981. There are several campuses in the vicinity of La Serena. The music department specialises in training ensemble musicians for bands and orchestras rather than soloists. This music department is unique in Chile in incorporating the Experimental Music School Jorge Peña Hen at both primary and secondary levels where all children receive music tuition from age 6. Instrumental tuition is given at three levels, the first two (Basico and Segundario) being pre-professional levels: • Basico: Eight years, divided into two cycles: Cycle 1, years 1 to 5, with instruction in recorder, Suzuki violin, choir singing, piano, and Cycle 2, years 6 to 8, when students may begin orchestral instruments. • Segundario: Four years, with individual tuition on the instrument. • Universitario: Nine semesters of professional training.
