Institution Notes:
The university was established in 1982. It has played a leading role in promoting and publicising the intangible cultural heritage - the arts and culture of the historically marginalised people of Limpopo with regard to oral history, culture, rituals, indigenous music skills and techniques and performances. The University has established the MER Mathivha Centre for African Languages, Arts and Culture to document, develop and promote arts and culture of the region and to encourage scholarship in this area.
