Institution Notes:
The university was founded in 1904, and the music department was established in 1923. There are three main areas of specialisation: Western classical music, jazz and ethnomusicology. The music department houses a 130-seat concert room. The library holds the International Library of African Music, with a significant collection of recordings of Southern African folk music. Lessons in performance are available to students in other faculties of the university, and tuition is offered for the Licentiate Diplomas of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), London, Trinity/Guildhall London, and the University of South Africa.
