The University of Kwazulu Natal was formed in 2004 by an amalgamation of the former University of Natal and the former University of Durban-Westville. A foundation program is organised for students preparing to enrol in the professional undergraduate course. There is a substantial collection of African and jazz instruments. In the Ukasa (Centre for Jazz and Popular Music) Saturday class music tuition is offered in performance (singing, drums, flute/clarinet, trumpet, saxophone, keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, muskanda), ensemble, music theory, drama, dance/movement, to young people and interested adults; minimum age is 16. Facilities include well-equipped electro-acoustic music studios. The Eleanor Bonnar Music Library houses a rare archive of black South African popular music, the Malcolm Hunter Collections of recordings of jazz and swing dating from 1895 to 1980, the Wilf Lowe Collection of bebop and other styles from after World War II, and an extensive ethnomusicological record collection.
