Institution Notes:
This is the oldest university in South Africa, being established in 1829. The University of Cape Town's music department is known internationally as the South African College of Music. It was established in 1910 and was incorporated into the University in 1923. The Opera School presents an annual season of opera performances. The library of the College houses the Percival Kirby African Instrument Collection - over 600 instruments made and played by all indigenous Southern African groups.
