Institution Notes:
The university was founded in 1904, and the music department was established in 1946. The Arts Program offers studies in visual arts, drama and theatre arts, music and combined arts. It is housed in a fine building with excellent facilities including 30 teaching studios, 48 practice rooms, seven lecture halls, a music library, five pipe organs as well as a concert organ, two choir rehearsal rooms a jazz studio, a keyboard laboratory, three concert grand pianos and a concert hall with excellent acoustic features. The Odeion String Quartet is a permanent, full-time resident quartet of the university. The library holds an extensive collection of string quartet scores. The former Bloemfontein College of Education has been incorporated into the University. Languages of instruction: Afrikaans and English.
