Yonsei University is a Presbyterian Christian university which was founded in 1885 and is the oldest private university in Korea. It gained its current name and status in 1957. There are over 35,000 students in 17 colleges and 12 graduate schools. Its College of Music, established in 1955, operates in four departments: sacred music, voice, instrumental music, and composition. Facilities include the Centennial Memorial Hall (1986), containing a 960-seat auditorium and a museum, the Yun Joo-Yong Hall of 374 seats, a music library, rehearsal rooms and electronic music studio. The Music Research Institute was established in 1987. It conducts studies of early and contemporary music and every year publishes a research journal and a collection of compositions for church choir. A continuing education program offers certification courses focusing on music pedagogy, Suzuki method in strings and piano performance.
