11-week group courses for foreigners to play Korean traditional instruments from the Gugak Centre, followed by a public performance at the National Gugak Center’s theatre on the 12th week.


Institution Notes:

This is a conservatory type institution which can trace its history back 1400 years. It gained its current title in 1951. The National Gugak Center is a centre of learning for Korean traditional music and operates in three performance halls. It aims to collect, notate and preserve a museum and library of Korea’s traditional music heritage. Attached to the Center are four performing groups which offer regular performances - Court Music Orchestra, Folk Music Group, Dance Theater and Contemporary Gugak Orchestra. There is a collection of over 60 traditional instruments. The Centre organises academic courses, performance courses for foreigners, ensembles, and research into the improvement, restoration and reformation of music instruments. It issues regular publications on Korean musicology research. There are regional branches in Namwon, Jindo and Busan.
