Omdurman is a suburb of Khartoum. The Institute of Music, Drama and Folklore was established in 1969. It provided tertiary-level practical tuition and encouraged research in music, drama and folklore for the first time in Sudan. It survived until 1989 when the National Islamic Front took power and transformed the Institute into a mouthpiece for religious propaganda. The courses mentioned describe the work of the music section when it was flourishing in its twenty-year heyday. Language of instruction is Arabic.
