Institution Notes:

With origins dating back to 1898, this is the oldest university in Sudan, being granted its current name and status in 1956. The Institute of African and Asian Studies was established in 1972. There was an active traditional music studies centre which issued numerous publications in English, supported partly by the Ford Foundation. The Institute held the Traditional Music Archive established in 1994, a semi-autonomous unit. There were around 4,000 hours of audio and video recordings of folk material. The Archive focused on the collection, documentation, preservation and dissemination of traditional music and folklore. It organised seminars and workshops and has produced CDs. The former Institute of African and Asian Studies has been closed and no music programs are now permitted at this institution.
