This public University can trace its history back to 1902, and gained its current name and status in 1950. The College of Fine and Applied Arts aimed to develop and enrich the Sudanese heritage in music, theatre and folklore. Besides courses in Sudanese traditional music, drama and folklore it included study of other traditional musics and Western music. There were faculties of music and of drama. The Faculty of Music consisted of departments of rudiments and composition, musical instruments, voice, Sudanese music, Eastern music and piano and accordion. There were also training courses in methodology so that graduates could teach traditional music and folklore in schools. The former Department of Music has been closed and no music programs are now permitted at this institution.
